Modern Religion
"Whereas modern religion often glorifies man,the religion of the Bible glorifies our sovereign God, who is most blessed and glorious in all His ways."
-C.H. Spurgeon-
"Remember that it is not hasty reading, but serious meditation on holy and heavenly truths, that makes them prove sweet and profitable to the soul. It is not the mere touching of the flower by the bee that gathers honey, but her abiding for a time on the flower that draws out the sweet. It is not he that reads most, but he that meditates most, that will prove to be the choicest, sweetest, wisest and strongest Christian." (Thomas Brooks)

Very true. I heard a sermon recently where the pastor made a similar point. If humans controlled the writing of the bible, we would be the heros. We would emphasize our virtue, our mightiness, our worthiness. This is not, however, what we find in the pages of Scripture. Indeed, even great patriarchs like Abraham are shown warts and all. Just think of the episode with Hagar, and all the bitterness and confusion that this sowed between Abraham and Sarah. Or think of David or Solomon and the great depth of their sin and pride which is revealed. This is because God truly is the hero of Scripture. He is El Roi, the God who sees.
One last point on the Abraham narrative, also recounted in that sermon. When Hagar and Ishmael were alone in the wilderness, having fled the cruelty and jealousy of Sarah, God saw them. They did not deserve this. Ishmael was a "wild donkey of a man" and Hagar was a lowly Egyptian handmaiden. Yet, "the God who Sees" saw them, knew them fully, and heard Hagar's petition. It is because God did NOT hear Christ's petition on the cross that he was able to hear Hagar's petition and ours as well. Blessed be El Roi!
That is an awesome quote. Right on.
